Well, this may be a little controversial, but I actually like the idea. I think it’s cool. You know, like, when the Air Force was formed, there was a lot of like pooh-poohing, and like, ‘Oh, how silly to have an Air Force!
And people today may not realize back then it was wildly panned as a ridiculous thing to create the Air Force. And I think it’s gonna become obvious that we should have a Space Force, too.
You know, it’s basically defense in space. And then I think also it could be pretty helpful for maybe expanding our civilization.

O não menos admirado Neil DeGrasse Tyson também teve um parecer favorável a iniciativa de Trump, durante uma entrevista à Stephen Colbert (The Late Show):

Daniel Kreps (RollingStone):
Colbert:  I like space exploration, I’m excited about us conquering space scientifically and through knowledge, but why do we need the Space Force?
Tyson: I can tell you that many people are thinking that we didn’t have a Space Force before, now we’re gonna have a Space Force. We have a Space Force, it’s called the United States Space Command and it’s under the auspices of the Air Force.
We already a presence in space: The Air Force launches satellites, the Air Force puts GPS satellites into orbit around Earth.
All I’m saying is this is not a new thing because we’ve had space assets – military space assets – since the Sixties. What is a spy satellite? It’s a space asset in the service of the military.

EP #118 (19/6):
A decisão de criar a Space Force como mais um braço das Forças Armadas foi comunicada pelo presidente Trump nesta segunda-feira (18/6) durante o encontro do National Space Council (NSC).
“When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely to have an American presence in space, we must have American dominance in space...
Very importantly, I am hereby directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a Space Force as the sixth branch of the Armed Forces.
That’s a big statement.”, disse o POTUS à audiência do Conselho.
Tim Fernholz (Quartz): Trump up-ended that policy in rambling opening remarks, instructing Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, to create the Space Force.
The service would be presumably be responsible for the extensive array of surveillance and communication satellites operated by the US Armed Forces, and more controversially for potential anti-satellite weapons and deterrence. It’s not clear whether or when the Space Force will be created.
